The medical scheme industry is complex. Recently there has been a stronger emphasis on the need for upskilling medical scheme trustees. The Medical Schemes Act requires trustees and principal officers to be 'fit and proper' and puts enormous responsibility on the board. The recently published HMI report recommends
“regulating and mandating a set of core competencies for trustees and principal officers before they can be eligible to manage a scheme.”

This is an INSETA accredited skills programme carrying twenty credits. To receive the credits and the INSETA Statement of Results, the learner must complete and be competent in a assignment and write an exam. Assignment building will be mostly completed in class. Attendance to the facilitation days is a requirement. Should you not want to submit the assignment and write the exam, then a Certificate of Attendance will be provided.
This five-day programme provides trustees, principal officers and fund managers with foundational knowledge and understanding of South Africa’s health system and medical schemes. The topics covered include the South African health system, the structure of medical schemes, benefit design and managed care - roles, functions and responsibilities of the key players.
